1 dead, 1 injured after Mississippi man rear-ends school bus in Jefferson County

CHINA, TX (JEFFERSON COUNTY) – A man from Mississippi was killed after he rear-ended a school bus in Jefferson County on Monday morning, according to 12 News Now.

The accident occurred west of China on Highway 90, near McDermand Road, at about 7:15 a.m. 56-year-old David Eugene Strickler, operating a white Dodge minivan, rear-ended a Hardin-Jefferson ISD school bus carrying 11 students inside as the bus slowed down to make a turn.

Strickler, a resident of Biloxi, Mississippi, died at the scene.

The bus driver was taken to the hospital in Beaumont for the treatment of minor wounds.

None of the students were reported as injured. They were transferred to another bus after being evaluated by emergency crews and were then safely taken to school.

Authorities closed all but one of the westbound lanes of the highway as they worked the accident, and asked drivers to avoid the area.
