BURKEVILLE, TX (NEWTON COUNTY) – A mail carrier was injured after being rear-ended, then crashing into a truck in Newton County earlier this week, according to 12 News Now.

The crash happened about 70 miles north of Beaumont on eastbound Highway 63, near the Louisiana state line, at about 12 p.m. Monday, when the mail carrier, 48-year-old Burkeville resident Shawna Kay, slowed down to make a turn.

Kay’s 2016 Jeep was struck from behind by the driver of a 2016 Mazda sedan. The impact pushed the Jeep into the westbound lanes, and into the path of a Peterbilt truck that was hauling a crane lift.

The truck and the Jeep collided, causing the Peterbilt to jackknife and pushing the Jeep into a nearby ditch.

Kay was taken to the hospital for the treatment of undisclosed injuries.

The other two drivers were not reported as hurt.

Following the crash, authorities closed Hwy 63 for several hours, until about 4:45 p.m.
