Passenger dies after single-vehicle wreck in east El Paso

EL PASO, TX — According to KVIA, a male passenger died early Saturday after a car collided with a light pole at an intersection in east El Paso.

El Paso Police responded to the scene at Montwood Drive and North Zaragoza Road, in the city’s Montwood neighborhood. The crash was first reported shortly after 12:30 a.m.

An early investigation by the EPPD’s Special Traffic Investigators show a 23-year-old man was behind the wheel of a Nissan Altima going northbound on Zaragoza Road at a high rate of speed. As he reached the curved intersection, he failed to negotiate a turn. Officials said the car slammed into the light pole and caught fire.

The driver and his passenger were pulled from the vehicle by El Paso Fire crews. Both patients were transported to an area hospital with undisclosed injuries. Officials said the passenger was later pronounced deceased.

An investigation remains underway, but speed has been determined to be a cause of the crash.
