Teen driver critically hurt in crash with trailer near El Paso International Airport

EL PASO, TX — An 19-year-old man was hospitalized Tuesday night after a high-speed crash on Walter Jones Boulevard in far northeast El Paso, reports El Paso Times.

El Paso Police said the accident took place in the 100 block of the road near Global Reach Drive, just northeast of the airport. It was first reported shortly after 6:00 p.m.

According to authorities, the young man, of Central El Paso, was behind the wheel of a 2015 Kia Cardenza traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the car. Moments later, the Kia veered into the westbound lanes, where it struck the trailer of a semi-truck. Officials said the impact of the crash knocked the rear axle off the trailer and smashed in the front-end of the Kia.

The driver of the Kia suffered critical injuries and was rushed to a local hospital.

The driver of the semi, a 29-year-old East El Paso man, was not reported hurt.

No further details have been shared at this time, but the El Paso Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigations Unit has determined speed was a factor.
