Driver facing charges following deadly La Joya crash

LA JOYA, TX – A man from Mission has been arrested and charged in connection with a deadly crash in La Joya, KRGV reports.

The incident began when a police officer attempted to stop a black Ford F-150 driven by the suspect, a man named Mario Oscar Maldonado. Instead of stopping, Maldonado sped away before rolling his truck on the dirt road.

The collision resulted in two deaths and ten injuries. Police believe that the driver was engaged in human smuggling and he is facing 12 counts of smuggling of persons, one count of evading arrest with vehicle causing death and one count of evading arrest.
