1 dead, 2 hurt after speeding driver crashes into group of bicyclists near Rye

RYE, TX (LIBERTY COUNTY) – A driver crashed into a group of cross-country bicyclists in Liberty County this weekend, resulting in the death of a 59-year-old man, according to information from 12 News Now.

The crash occurred on FM 787 Road near Rye at about 11 a.m. Saturday, when the 66-year-old driver of a Ford Escape failed to control the speed of his vehicle. He then collided with three bicyclists traveling in a group of six that were traveling from San Diego to San Augustine, Florida.

59-year-old Kent Joshua Wospeka, of South Hamilton, Massachusetts, was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Two other bicyclists were taken to the hospital with severe injuries.

The driver remained at the scene after the crash. It is unclear if they will be facing any charges in connection with the accident.
