2 university students killed in alleged DUI crash on MLK Jr Pkwy

BEAUMONT, TX – Two university students were killed this weekend in Beaumont in a car accident that is suspected of being caused by a drunk driver, according to information from 12 News Now.

The collision happened at around 2 a.m. Sunday in the 2400 block of S MLK Jr Parkway, as the driver of a black Chevrolet truck was driving north in the southbound lanes of the highway, against the flow of traffic. It then crashed head-on into a gray Nissan Altima.

19-year-old Clyde Thompson, the driver of the Altima, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Thompson’s passenger, 19-year-old Tonysha Lashay Smith, was taken to the hospital, where she later was pronounced dead.

The wrong-way driver was taken to the hospital and may have been under the influence when the accident occurred. Charges may be forthcoming.

Both victims were students at Lamar University.
