    Traffic Accidents In Galveston

Galveston is a beautiful vacation destination along the Gulf Coast of Texas. While it has a relatively small population at just over 50,000 people, Galveston thrives on the tourism industry that brings millions of people to the island looking to soak in the sun and the countless other attractions Galveston has to offer.

While there aren’t many locals traveling on Galveston’s roads, the several million tourists that visit the Texas Cost every year make up for it. Galveston sees nearly 2,000 crashes annually and upwards of ten fatalities as a result of accidents within the city limits.

A large majority of these crashes are a direct result of drivers traveling around the island while under the influence. Another major factor in Galveston wrecks is semi-truck drivers on tight deadlines attempting to cross onto the island via the major highway connecting Galveston to mainland Texas.

What You Do If You’re in an Accident in Galveston

Being in an auto accident can be one of the most traumatizing things to happen to an individual. That is why it is very important to stay calm and follow these important steps to ensure your safety and protection under the law:

    Step 1

Evaluate your injuries, if any were sustained

Even if the collision is minor and you don’t believe any damage is done, you are still legally required to stop any time your vehicle hits something.

Ensure that no one was hurt as a result of the crash. First check on those in your vehicle, then others involved.

If someone did sustain an injury, contact emergency services immediately.

    Step 2

    Call the Police

No matter how serious or minor the accident was, you will need an official there to document any important information at the scene.

Do not discuss fault with the other driver.

    Step 3

Acquire all of the information you can regarding the accident

    • How the accident transpired.
    • Location of the accident.
    • Description of the vehicles involved and damage sustained.
    • Driving conditions that may have played a factor.
    • Direction each driver was traveling when the crash occurred.
    • Take photos of any damaged property, if possible.

    Step 4

Acquire all pertinent information on the other driver(s)

    • Full name and address as listed on their driver’s license.
    • Vehicle identification and license plate numbers.
    • Name and contact information for their insurance company.
    • Their insurance policy number.
    • Phone number and any other contact information available.

    Step 5

Make sure the official at the scene files a crash report.

    • Get the full name and badge number of all officers that are on the scene.
    • If possible, ask the officer filing the report for their business card so you can contact them directly if necessary in the future.

Why You Should Always File an Accident Report

While it may not seem necessary to file a report in a minor accident, you should always do so. Having an impartial officer on the scene to take down nothing but the facts could save you a lot of hassle should you attempt to receive compensation for damages later on. If there is no legal record of the accident occurring, proving your injuries are a direct result of the accident will be much more complicated later on.

It’s also important to seek medical attention right away. You may not notice any injuries or damages immediately following the crash. Your adrenaline is high, and there are a lot of things happening at once. You might realize something is aching or bruised until hours after the accident.

The same goes for damages to your vehicle. It is always a good idea to have a second set of eyes to look over all vehicles involved and assess any and all scratches, dents, and dings on your vehicle.
